I cannot recall so much trouble installing Windows since I was installing Windows 95 from floppy disc media. Windows 7 installer just could not "create a new partition or locate an existing one". Lots of frustration and fear about BIOS being hardcoded to expect presence of OEM recovery partition and reporting wrong information in its absence (I had deleted it). After two evenings of trial and error, it came to light that problems were tied to my created installation media - microSD card connected through USB port. After I changed to traditional USB flash drive, installation went smoothly. Oh, the redundant steps and backups.
